B.V. Acharya

Born in Belpu village of Udupi District, had his early education in Mangalore. He obtained law degree in 1956, after studying law at Madras Law College.

He was enrolled as an advocate before the High Court of Mysore on 29th August 1957. Set up practice in Mangalore. He worked as an Additional Public Prosecutor at Mangalore for 4 years between 1961 ad 1965, Held the post of District  Government  Pleader, Dakshina Kannada  for 5 years between 1967 and 1972.

In 1972, he shifted practice to Karnataka  High Court, Bangalore. Became member of the Karnataka State Bar Council between 1973 and 1981. He served as Chairman of the Karnataka State Bar Council between 1979 and 1982. 

Appeared as Special Public Prosecutor in many sensational cases. He has also appeared before many Commissions of Enquiry.

Designated as Senior Advocate by the High Court of Karnataka on 2nd May 1989.

He held the post of Advocate General of Karnataka, five times between  1989 and 2012. As Advocate General  he has speared between the Supreme Court in many important cases including the second  Judges'''' case, which was heard by a bench comprising 9 judges.

In 2005, he was appointed as Special Public Prosecutor in the disproportionate assets case against Selvi Jayalalitha, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He held the said post till 2012, when he resigned.

In 2006, he was felicitated by the High Court of Karnataka during its Golden Jubilee celebrations on his completing 50 years of practice.

In January 2009, the Mangalore University conferred on him Honorary Doctorate recognizing the service rendered by him in the legal field .

He served as a Member  of the 19th Law Commission of India for two years (2010-2012).

for a term of 3 years (August 2009 to 2012 ) he served as the Chairman of BMS Educational Trust, which manages various prestigious educational institutions including three Engineering colleges and one Law College.

He served as Director of the Karnataka Bank for 8 years from 1996 upto 2004.

Sri Acharya has widely travelled in India and abroad. He has visited more than 25 foreign countries.

At the age of 90 years, Sri Acharya is in active practice in the High Court of Karnataka. His son Sri B.L. Acharya and daughter Smt.B. Pushpalatha  are practicing advocates before High Court of Karnataka.
